The history of the Ninja Turtles movies

Since the early 1990s, the Ninja Turtles have been a mainstay in popular culture. Originally created as a comic book series, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles quickly became a sensation, spawning an array of merchandise, video games, and, of course, movies. To date, there have been seven Ninja Turtle movies released (with an eighth currently in development), each with its own unique take on the beloved characters.

The first Ninja Turtle movie was released in 1990 and was simply titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The film was a big hit with audiences and grossed over $200 million at the box office. It was followed by two sequels—Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993)—both of which were also successful.

In 1997, a live-action/animated hybrid film titled TMNT was released. The movie was not as successful as the earlier films but still managed to gross over $50 million at the box office.

In 2007, a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was released. The film was directed by Kevin Munroe and starred Patrick Stewart as Leonardo, Sarah Michelle Gellar as April O’Neil, and Chris Evans as Casey Jones. Although it received mixed reviews from critics, the movie grossed over $95 million at the box office worldwide.

In 2014, another live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was released under the title Out of the Shadows. This time around, the film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $82 million at the box office.

A sequel to Out of the Shadows is currently in development and is set to be released in 2016. In addition to this, it was recently announced that a new animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series is set to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2018.

The different Ninja Turtles movie timelines

With the release of the new Ninja Turtles movie in 2016, there has been some confusion about which movie timeline is the “correct” one. To help clear things up, we’ve put together a brief guide to the different Ninja Turtles movie timelines.

The original timeline is the one started with the release of the first Ninja Turtles movie in 1990. This timeline includes the sequels released in 1991 and 1993, as well as the animated TV series that ran from 1987 to 1996. This timeline was later continued with the release of the 2007 CGI-animated movie and the subsequent TV series that ran from 2012 to 2017.

The second timeline is the one started with the release of the live-action Ninja Turtles movie in 2014. This timeline includes only that movie and its 2016 sequel.

Which timeline is “correct” is a matter of personal preference, but both are considered canon.

The future of the Ninja Turtles movies

The first ever Ninja Turtles movie was released in 1990 and was simply titled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” The movie did very well in theaters, grossing over $200 million dollars worldwide. This allowed for two sequels to be greenlit, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” in 1991 and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” in 1993. All three of these movies were live action movies with the CGI turtles being added in during post-production.

In 2007, Warner Bros. bought the rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise with plans to reboot the series. The first step in this process was to release a new animated movie titled “TMNT” in 2007. The movie was a moderate success, grossing just over $95 million dollars globally.

Plans for a new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie were developed and it was eventually released in 2014. The movie was a commercial success, grossing over $485 million dollars worldwide. A sequel titled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” was released in 2016 and unfortunately did not do as well as its predecessor, only grossing $245 million globally.

It is currently unknown if there are any plans for future Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies, but given the decline in box office numbers for the most recent movie, it seems unlikely that we will see another one anytime soon.
